The Best Passage I have read so far..

Extremely Overloaded these days, I dont get to write these days. But let me sneak this in..

Roark stood before them as each man stands in the innocence of his own mind. But Roark stood like that before a hostile crowd--and they knew suddenly that no hatred was possible to him. For the flash of an instant, they grasped the manner of his consciousness. Each asked himself: do I need anyone's approval?--does it matter?--am I tied? And for that instant, each man was free--free enough to feel benevolence for every other man in the room.
It was only a moment; the moment of silence when Roark was about to speak.
"Thousands of years ago, the first man discovered how to make fire. He was probably burned at the stake he had taught his brothers to light. He was considered an evildoer who had dealt with a demon mankind dreaded. But thereafter men had fire to keep them warm, to cook their food, to light their caves. He had left them a gift they had not conceived and he had lifted darkness off the earth. Centuries later, the first man invented the wheel. He was probably torn on the rack he had taught his brothers to build. He was considered a transgressor who ventured into forbidden territory. But thereafter, men could travel past any horizon. He had left them a gift they had not conceived and he had opened the roads of the world.
"That man, the unsubmissive and first, stands in the opening chapter of every legend mankind has recorded about its beginning. Prometheus was chained to a rock and torn by vultures--because he had stolen the fire of the gods. Adam was condemned to suffer--because he had eaten the fruit of the tree of knowledge. Whatever the legend, somewhere in the shadows of its memory mankind knew that its glory began with one and that that one paid for his courage.
"Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps down new roads armed with nothing but their own vision. Their goals differed, but they all had this in common: that the step was first, the road new, the vision unborrowed, and the response they received--hatred. The great creators--the thinkers, the artists, the scientists, the inventors--stood alone against the men of their time. Every great new thought was opposed. Every great new invention was denounced. The first motor was considered foolish. The airplane was considered impossible. The power loom was considered vicious. Anesthesia was considered sinful. But the men of unborrowed vision went ahead. They fought, they suffered and they paid. But they won.
"No creator was prompted by a desire to serve his brothers, for his brothers rejected the gift he offered and that gift destroyed the slothful routine of their lives. His truth was his only motive. His own truth, and his own work to achieve it in his own way. A symphony, a book, an engine, a philosophy, an airplane or a building--that was his goal and his life. Not those who heard, read, operated, believed, flew or inhabited the thing he had created. The creation, not its users. The creation, not the benefits others derived from it. The creation which gave form to his truth. He held his truth above all things and against all men.
"His vision, his strength, his courage came from his own spirit. A man's spirit, however, is his self. That entity which is his consciousness. To think, to feel, to judge, to act are functions of the ego.
"The creators were not selfless. It is the whole secret of their power--that it was self-sufficient, self-motivated, self-generated. A first cause, a fount of energy, a life force, a Prime Mover. The creator served nothing and no one. He had lived for himself.
"And only by living for himself was he able to achieve the things which are the glory of mankind. Such is the nature of achievement.
"Man cannot survive except through his mind. He comes on earth unarmed. His brain is his only weapon. Animals obtain food by force. Man has no claws, no fangs, no horns, no great strength of muscle. He must plant his food or hunt it. To plant, he needs a process of thought. To hunt, he needs weapons, and to make weapons--a process of thought. From this simplest necessity to the highest religious abstraction, from the wheel to the skyscraper, everything we are and everything we have comes from a single attribute of man--the function of his reasoning mind.
"But the mind is an attribute of the individual. There is no such thing as a collective brain. There is no such thing as a collective thought. An agreement reached by a group of men is only a compromise or an average drawn upon many individual thoughts. It is a secondary consequence. The primary act--the process of reason--must be performed by each man alone. We can divide a meal among many men. We cannot digest it in a collective stomach. No man can use his lungs to breathe for another man. No man can use his brain to think for another. All the functions of body and spirit are private. They cannot be shared or transferred.
"We inherit the products of the thought of other men. We inherit the wheel. We make a cart. The cart becomes an automobile. The automobile becomes an airplane. But all through the process what we receive from others is only the end product of their thinking. The moving force is the creative faculty which takes this product as material, uses it and originates the next step. This creative faculty cannot be given or received, shared or borrowed. It belongs to single, individual men. That which it creates is the property of the creator. Men learn from one another. But all learning is only the exchange of material. No man can give another the capacity to think. Yet that capacity is our only means of survival.
"Nothing is given to man on earth. Everything he needs has to be produced. And here man faces his basic alternative: he can survive in only one of two ways--by the independent work of his own mind or as a parasite fed by the minds of others. The creator originates. The parasite borrows. The creator faces nature alone. The parasite faces nature through an intermediary.
"The creator's concern is the conquest of nature. The parasite's concern is the conquest of men.
"The creator lives for his work. He needs no other men. His primary goal is within himself. The parasite lives second-hand. He needs others. Others become his prime motive.
"The basic need of the creator is independence. The reasoning mind cannot work under any form of compulsion. It cannot be curbed, sacrificed or subordinated to any consideration whatsoever. It demands total independence in function and in motive. To a creator, all relations with men are secondary.
"The basic need of the second-hander is to secure his ties with men in order to be fed. He places relations first. He declares that man exists in order to serve others. He preaches altruism.
"Altruism is the doctrine which demands that man live for others and place others above self.
"No man can live for another. He cannot share his spirit just as he cannot share his body. But the second-hander has used altruism as a weapon of exploitation and reversed the base of mankind's moral principles. Men have been taught every precept that destroys the creator. Men have been taught dependence as a virtue.
"The man who attempts to live for others is a dependent. He is a parasite in motive and makes parasites of those he serves. The relationship produces nothing but mutual corruption. It is impossible in concept. The nearest approach to it in reality--the man who lives to serve others--is the slave. If physical slavery is repulsive, how much more repulsive is the concept of servility of the spirit? The conquered slave has a vestige of honor. He has the merit of having resisted and of considering his condition evil. But the man who enslaves himself voluntarily in the name of love is the basest of creatures. He degrades the dignity of man and he degrades the conception of love. But this is the essence of altruism.
"Men have been taught that the highest virtue is not to achieve, but to give. Yet one cannot give that which has not been created. Creation comes before distribution--or there will be nothing to distribute. The need of the creator comes before the need of any possible beneficiary. Yet we are taught to admire the second-hander who dispenses gifts he has not produced above the man who made the gifts possible. We praise an act of charity. We shrug at an act of achievement.

A Trek to SaavanDurga, 15th April 2006

Lamp, Nattamai and I started on a Sunday morning at about 6:00 from Indiranagar to Sandeep's place at Mahalakshmi Layout. The plan is to pool into Sandeep's car and reach SaavanDurga as early as possible to escape the scorching heat. For starters, this is a huge single rock. situated approx. 60 kms from Bangalore near Magadi town, on Bangalore-Magadi Road. Below this rock there is a temple. Next to the temple there is a botanical garden maintained by the govt. of karnataka. Here is a view

We were joined by Vishwas,Swarop and of course Sandeep. We reached the place around 9:15. After a little look around, we started climbing up the hill at around 9:30 in the morning. The sun had properly set in by then. We did not know the easy way out. We started climbing it from the wrong side. We soon realized how impossible it was to climb at around 75 degrees upward. The mere thought of coming down scarred us.

So We gave up and started climbing up from the other side. The peak is at an altitude of 300 meters. There were around 3 pit stops. At every possible break, we clicked our cams.

After a grueling one and a half hours, we were at the top. We could listen to the wind and meditate. The climb is worth it.

The climb down was relatively less draining. The flip side is there is no infrastructure for Rock Climbers. No medical facilities in the vicinity. A place like this offers a wonderful opportunity to setup an Adventure School. Sadly there is no one to grab it.

We came back to Bangalore just at the right time for an evening grub and crash. The Next thing I heard was When my maid knocked my door the next day morning.

Gymming and The Art of Living

I always lacked endurance. I can run at 8 Kmph for 20 mins. But not at 6 Kmph for an hour. I can do 1 set with a 5 Kg dumbbell but not 3 sets with a 2 Kg dumbbell. But gymming for fitness requires more endurance than flexibility and strength. So consequently, I was never able to go to Gym regularly. Most of the time I had gathered all my strength to start gymming only to realize the lack of it after a week or so. The same looped again and again until the day I joined Art of Living's Part I Course.

Art of Living's Part I course teaches basic breathing techniques along with Sudarshan Kriya - meaning The Right Vision. It increases the amount the oxygen in blood and other tissues. So there is a general feeling of Euphoria after you finish a session. The Basic exercises prime your body for Sudarshan Kriya. More the capacity of lungs, the better will be the effect of Sudarshan Kriya. Basic exercises involve long slow breaths and short fast bursts in different positions. This serves to clear the air passage and increase the capacity of lungs to take long breaths.

This is what Sri Sri Ravishankar has to say about Sudarshan Kriya,
"We need to do a cleansing process within ourselves. In sleep we get rid of fatigue, but the deeper stresses remain in our body. Sudarshan Kriya cleanses the system from the inside. The breath has a great secret to offer."

Since breath is closely linked to mind, regulating the breath will have a soothing effect on the mind.

Art of Living's Part I course is fun-filled and generally a gamut of people from different age, culture and geography do the course. Even though it was a 2-3 hr course per day, I never had to wait for the day's part to get over. The course helps us to build a clear daily routine if we lack one. It inculcates discipline in a playful manner. At the end of the course I had given up Alcohol and smoking, without any effort. I don't know how and why it happened. At least that was not my intention when I joined the course.

Sudarshan Kriya is open to Research. Here is one such finding.
http://www.artofliving.org/research/research.htm

Now, I notice that my endurance is not all that bad. Art of Living has certainly helped my gymming. I can run for 40 mins. I can do three sets with 2 Kg dumbbells. All this without any conscious effort. Now I wonder WOW!

Jai Gurudev.

A Tragic Tale of a Despicable Hero, The Prince of Kolkata . Does he really deserve this treatment-Time to introspect

Let me start out by saying - I am not a Bengali from Calcutta neither I am a Pakistani spy, I love my India and yes I support Sourav Ganguly. This article can move even the hardest critics of Ganguly and perhaps alter the reader’s perception regarding Ganguly which in most of the cases is eclipsed by exaggerated criticism by our own “Biased Media” .
Let's look at it logically. Who is Sourav to me? A rich man's son who has had many privileges growing up that I didn't have - by common consent arrogant, abrasive and petulant. Not my favourite kind of person, but as a cricketer, the case is entirely different .

Let me say at the start that there is a strong cricketing case that can be made for Ganguly's exclusion. But before that lets have a glance at a series of incidents starting from September 2005 after India got over with tour of Zimbabwe :

## Chappell was appointed coach for Indian Cricket Team and we all are well aware about Chappell's arrogance and Ganguly’s reputation in Australia ( Hats off to Australian Media ). As expected Chappell sparks off a war through a leaked mail to BCCI in which he claimed that Ganguly was “mentally unfit” – A newly appointed foreign coach makes such absurd remarks against Indian skipper ,with a century in his last innings, and that too on Indian soil and we all tolerated………bcoz he was Ganguly – a man often criticised by our own media .

## Canards were spread that Ganguly faked injury. The investigation of the board cleared Ganguly of the charges of faking an injury - yet the coach, who had been proven to be a liar, was not taken to task. Instead it was Ganguly who was out of the team despite having successfully defended himself against all accusations . Ganguly was out of the team for two matches due to injury but could not make a comeback for rest of the matches…….He was Dropped
(The credit should also be given Indian Political Infrastucture……..The earlier panel of selectors was scrapped and new panel was appointed…….Reason : Pawar replaced Dalmiya and unfortunately the new panel lead by Pawar favoured Chappell – Seems less like a panel of selectors , more like a panel of puppets)Here's the truth. Ganguly has been dropped because he will not play ball with Chappell, since he has his own ways of going about things. This makes it purely a power struggle between coach and captain and the captain has been defeated and replaced by someone more pliable.

## October 20: After having been dropped from National side .Ganguly decided to play for East Zone . He was greeted with a green top at Rajkot .He replied with
an elegant 117 along with figures of 2/18 and 2/32……showing no signs of fading away .Ganguly finally finished with a total of 9 wickets in 3 matches in Duleep Trophy.

## November 21: The Indian squad was announced for the two tests against Lanka .Ganguly lost his captaincy for test team also but retained his place in the side. This great favour was done to Ganguly perhaps with a view of conducting a peaceful tie at Edens a week later against South Africa.
Even Kapil Dev had had enough. While speaking to reporters in Kolkata on Nov 21 he said, "I like Sourav's arrogance. I don't like him begging for a place. He should stand tall and perform consistently to get back into the team. That is the Sourav Ganguly I know."
And this is what that Kiran More, the chairman of selectors, said on that day: "Sourav has not performed that well.We are not very happy with his performance during the last two to three years".(Must have been very happy with Tendulkar’s performance for past two years )

## November 23 -26 : Bengal vs Maharastra (Ranji Tie)
Ganguly again slams mamooth 159 featuring 17 fours along with incredible figures of 5/75 reminding of his presence…….

##November 25. Eden Gardens. A green top at Eden. More and Dravid ask the curator to cut the grass but he does not oblige. The press shouts bloody murder - it is a plot by Bengalis/Kolkatans to make India lose. Incidentally, are More and Dravid going to expect the curator of the Barbados pitch during the next World Cup to cut off the grass just because we can't play on green pitches?
Greg Chappell shows the Calcutta crowd the middle finger (or tends to his injured finger according to the official version). Unacceptable behaviour from the national coach? Nope. According to an article in a national newspaper, the Calcutta crowd deserved it. And why ? Because they had prepared a green pitch. Because they had booed Dravid.

##December 10-14: Firoz Shah Kotla -- It was not a domestic match but an international test match.Ganguly was under the scrutiny of millions of Cricket fans. He was in a do-or-die situation . Failure again could have been end of road for him. He scored 39 in his first innings on an ungenerous wicket under enormous amount of pressure along with a century partnership with Tendulkar .Then in second innings also he contributed valuable 40 runs in crucial stage of the match . The “Royal Aggressive Arrogant Tiger” forgot his past legacy , sidelined his self respect and behaved very normally throughout the match, even though playing under another captain after leading Team India for 6 years must be pinching at the back of his mind. Coach Greg Chappell, captain Rahul Dravid and almost every Cricket fan was satisfied with Ganguly’s performance . Only Tendulkar and Dravid scored more than him in that match.

##December 14 : The manner in which events unfolded soon after the Delhi Test left a few people stunned. The selection committee decided to retain Rahul Dravid as captain for the forthcoming series against Pakistan and England .Then came the announcement, deadpan as anything, that there was one change in the squad, with Jaffer replacing Ganguly. Kiran More, the chairman of selectors, soon after the selection meeting said. "We did not want Sourav at No. 6 because Yuvraj will play there. He has been consistent and we want to give him more opportunities. It's not done to have Sourav in the squad and not have him in the playing eleven. We are also keeping the future in mind." I think Ganguly should work on lessening his age. Ironically Dravid along with Greg Chappell, the coach.said few minutes before "He played very well in both innings.I'm sure he'll be disappointed that he did not go on and make a bigger score ".Former players like Prassana ,Kirmani, Kirty Azad spoke in favour of Dada
.
## December 14 –18 : After Ganguly was sacked from the Indian team for the third Test against Sri Lanka, there has been an uproar in the entire country with former cricket players, politicians and film and television actors denouncing the national selectors' decision. Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal have witnessed large-scale disruption of public life, with people squatting on railway tracks and putting up road blocks. Ganguly said that he was 'extremely touched' by the affection shown to him in the last few days. "But it's time to understand the situation," Ganguly continued, "as the Test match [at Ahmedabad] starts tomorrow and we need to support the Indian team."

## December 24: After whole lot of drama with Ganguly’s exclusion even raised in Parliament It was time for BCCI president Sharad Pawar to enter into the drama. After having talk with Ganguly at his home , he confirmed personally with other players regarding fake allegations about Ganguly’s uncooperative behavoiur in dressing room and forced the selectors to pick Ganguly for the upcoming tour of Pakistan. So it was absolutely impossible for selectors to ignore Ganguly .

## January 3-6 : Ganguly was asked for explanation for skipping the Bengal vs Gujrat match by the "frustated" selectors even though Ganguly stated that he'd missed Bengal's Delhi match, and would also not play the Gujarat match because of unavoidable personal reasons ..Eventually Ganguly didn’t go to Lahore on Jan 5 along with Indian team and decided to stay back for Bengal vs TN match to “Prove” himself to “Selectors” regarding their “forced decision to include him ”. Ganguly, up against a good side , scored 59 & 88 (22 fours,1 six overall)at strike rate of over 70 and had figures of 3/62 and 2/32 even though bengal lost the match by 222 runs. Nobody can ask for better reply.

##January 29 – Feb 2: Ganguly didn’t get a chance in first test , dropped for second test and picked again for third test , a treatment generally met with newcomers .Anyways Pakistan was dismissed for 245 and India’s reply also was miserable. The top guns Sehwag.Dravid,Laxman,Sachin fell very cheaply leaving the responsibilty to young Yuvraj and mentally tensed Ganguly . We are very well aware of the mockery made by media and public regarding Ganguly’s batting against pace attack.Up against Shoib,Asif and Sami bowling at a speed of 150 km/hr on a bouncy seaming track with ball doing everything in air under tremendous pressure Ganguly ,according to me played absolutely majestic innings of 35 runs and along with Yuvi and brought India close to Pakistan’s total. India top order failed again miserably in second innings and again Ganguly (37) and Yuvraj (122) tried to resist but could not succeed.India lost by 341 runs .

AND again Ganguly was dropped for a test series at home against England, drawn 1-1,dominated by England and in which India failed to get past 350.After going through above incidents of past six months, Can u ask for a better commitment from a despicable and suppressed player aging 34.To add to it Chappell’s hatred against Ganguly is not coming to an end , when he again passed idiotic remarks to British Media that Ganguly wanted to continue captaincy for “Financial Reasons” . We are Indians. A foreign intruder is demolishing India’s Pride and Legacy. Don’t you feel like throwing such rubbish creatures out of our country!!!

And then of course there is the blatantly biased press coverage. And why are they biased against Sourav? Simply because Ganguly does not give them quotable quotes and instead pampers a select coterie of journalists - as a result those outside the "circle of trust" have been waiting with their knives out ready to plunge it in when he slipped up. And slip up he did and out came the daggers. When Sachin was booed by the home crowd at Mumbai owing to his failure in 10 consecutive innings , it was “unbelievable” for Media .After serving country for 10 years , when Ganguly was scrapped of his captaincy and literally thrown out of the team , it was an expected move for Media .You wont find double standards at higher intensity than this.Ganguly scored three centuries in world cup,one in Super Six and one in SF, otherwise India would have lost to Kenya in semis. But all the 3 tons were against weak sides. Huh a weak side defeating strong sides, making Australian sweat for victory in Super Six is no longer a weak side during that period . Both Ganguly and Tendulkar had performed below par for last three years after World Cup.But again Tendulkar has managed to maintain his healthy average by scores of 241* against Australia when India piled up 750 ,extremely slow 194* when Dravid was forced to declare , 248* against “Giants” Bangladesh and record breaking 109 against Sri Lanka that took almost an year .Leaving apart these innings Tendulkar’s performance has been more miserable than Ganguly’s, the rest of his scores will appear somewhat like an ordinary Bangladeshi Batsmen , but no one dare critisize this inconsistency. By any means, I don’t want to remark that Ganguly is anyhow a better player than Sachin, but without any doubt he has been excellent Captain, much much better than Sachin . I also don’t want that players like Sachin and Ganguly be treated with a high degree of professionalism like Australia treated the greats like Mark Waugh and Steve Waugh. What I aspire is that hypocrisy and double standards should be abolished by all means from Cricket, a sport that is worshipped in our country.Does Sourav Ganguly not deserve even one tenth of respect today that we have for Sachin Tendulkar??

The Ganguly era couldn't go on for ever but for the magical moments it provided us, it definitely deserved a more memorable end.

Sourav Ganguly – We all know very well. The fiercely passionate, scrappy, abrasive and proud Sourav Ganguly. The most successful test skipper for India , the only one to win a test series in Pakistan ,one who lead India to the finals of the World Cup after 20 years one who broke the jinks and won the test series outside subcontinent after 19 years, having 16000 odd runs and 30 odd centuries along with his name .The same man who repeatedly kept Steve Waugh waiting for the toss. Yes, the same man who bared his chest at the Lord's balcony and enacted a war dance. How he was reduced to such desperation, leading him to few teary-eyed interviews tried to invoke sympathy. "I don't know what I have done to deserve this", one can only lament. How the selectors were forced to gradually nudge him out of office, when his contribution deserved a grand and heroic farewell, one can only ponder.

The fire still burns inside Royal Bengal Ganguly - and as the fools jeer and mock him he continues tirelessly determined to come back. The fact is that he is fighting hard at the nets, the fact is that he is not backing out, the fact is that he has regained his form? Its so easy to go down from here blaming the system but its equally difficult to stand against all odds…….Ganguly has opted latter on

Auto rickshaws suck

"Dad, I will leave next week. I am so tired of traveling to office everyday. This extended break will spare me that" - I told my father on the day I am supposed to leave for Bangalore. My Dad stood dumbfounded. It is natural for anyone to wonder how a 3 km journey can be so much gruel some. But for me, nothing drains me more that this 20 minute travel to the office at M.G Road from Cambridge Layout for sure. Bangalore is probably the only place where Auto rickshaws account for at least 65% of the traffic, more so when there is a traffic jam. We need to deal with this menace swiftly before these three wheelers swallow the entire city leaving no room for other vehicles to run.
"He turned-on the left indicator, hand-signaled for the right turn but went straight ignoring the traffic signal" - how apt this description fits a Bangalore Autowallah. To add to the woes, traffic policemen in Bangalore turn a blind-eye to autos. Autos don't get caught for not having done pollution test for a long long time. James Watt invented the steam engine in 1763. Autowallahs love James Watt for sure, for they have been using this same engine for the last 200 years - generation after generation, pumping record amounts of hydro-chlorofluoro carbons in to the atmosphere. Have they become a substantial vote bank - the auto drivers’ fraternity? For how will you then explain the government’s lack of nerve to question them? They mind no rules, there is no "no parking for them" - they even park in the middle of M.G Road and pick up a fight with a descent looking waganer'er, there is no one to question their fare - they can charge any factor of the meter-charge, they have no uniforms, no moral code to adhere to and are a cancer to the urban infrastructure.
We are also partly responsible. Nobody raises this issue in public. How long can we afford to allow these tri-wheelers to swarm the city and bring the traffic to near standstill. Bodies representing IT, BPO crowds in Bangalore should act fast; they are the people most affected by this menace. Auto rickshaws should not be allowed to run in the city during peak hours - 8:00Am to 11 am & 5Pm to 8Pm. Bangaloreans on their part have to encourage car-pooling, public transports - those that are efficient modes of transporting people. Corporates have a big role to play. On their part, they can run their own buses to reduce the burden of employees. How long can we remain blaming the governments for our own inactions??

Leading Life by chance

"Do not let life take its own course. Lead the way" My dad told me while I was playing Empire Earth in my PC with a new sound system. It did not strike any chord in the inside of me. I had just finished my undergrad and chilling out full time at my home, tired of exams, books and fundas. "I have written enough exams & solved enough problems than my parents & grand parents put together", I said to myself. Both my parents are post graduates to mention. After all I have done my Engineering with a first class degree from a premier Institute and I am gonna be joining a Multi National firm starting up its operations in India for the first time. "Don't badger me dad. I am already leading the way" I replied brusquely, hoping to put an end to the conversation.

Days passed by. I got used to the so-called corporate culture and learnt stuff like dining etiquette and netiquette. Then came the live projects. Time zones vanished and months passed like hours. Pizza became a staple food at night. Leaving the office at 6:00 clock became nightmarish. Consequently 7:00 Am came too called a very early morning to me. Staying awake late in the night and Working on weekends (and of course eating pizza for both lunch and night) while my other friends would go out trying different restaurants drained me both mentally and physically. And since I had done anything except working in office, when I had some time to chill out my mind refused to think on its own. It needed booze and nicotine. "Liver is filthy. Kill it" - my mind said I thought. With a bunch of very good friends around me, I did not get a chance to venture into anything beyond alcohol. But that was good enough (rather bad enough) to throw my health and body into disarray.

Now standing at the brink of self destruction, I ask myself "Am I still driving my life?” "NO" - pat came the reply from my heart. "No looking back. Over clock yourself and run at speed to catch your life and jump into its drivers' seat to take charge" - my dad told me in my dreams that day.

Dravid and the art of playing for a Draw

Dravid is the darling of Indian Media. He can afford to make a bad decision after winning the toss, can afford to accumulate runs at snails' pace, can make illogical field placings, yet (or yet again) he does not have to bear the brunt of the unforgiving media. And all this(xept batting at snails' pace which he invariably does on most occasions) happened during the last test match between India and England in Mumbaii. As a general rule, batting first in the Indian subcontinent pitches is not very difficult; More so in a brown looking Mumbai pitch. If Ganguly had done such a thing, I am sure the entire media and former crickers(how former does not matter; From some Nikand Patekar who played for India in the late 1920's to our dearest Bishensingh Bedi) would have been all over him.

Herez a joke abt what might have conspired between Kiran More, Greg Chappel , RajSingh Dungarpur and Sharad Pawar after India lost that match to a second string English side.

A top level meeting at the BCCI office in Mumbai. Those present: Sharad Pawar, Greg Chappell, Kiran More and Raj Singh Dungarpur.

Pawar: Thrashed by a third rate England team! We have become the laughing stock of the nation. It’s time we get Sourav Ganguly back.

Chappell: But Mr Pawar, how can that be possible? He is out for good.

More: I have been telling people that as long as I’m alive, Sourav cannot be in the Indian team!

Pawar: Then you better die fast! Look, I want Sourav not in the team but as a fielding coach.

Dungarpur: Sharadbhai, the stress is telling. Why don’t you take it easy for a few days?

Pawar: I am perfectly okay. Look, the team fielding has become atrocious.... They are a bunch of butter-fingered buffoons. How many catches did they drop at Nagpur and Mumbai? One dozen, two dozen?

Chappell: Well, these things do happen. You know, the glorious uncertainties of cricket.

Pawar: You are the worst uncertainty. You have been yelling from rooftops that this would be the best fielding combination available and that Sourav had been dropped because he could not field. You held up Yuvraj as an example and he dropped more catches in Mumbai than the number of times a baby drops a thimble!

Chappell: The truth is I’m allergic to Sourav.

Pawar: Then why don’t you think up of some under-arm tactics to take care of your allergy. I want Sourav as the fielding coach and that’s that.

Dungarpur: But Sharadbhai, what about the team morale?

Pawar: Morale? At slip position, Dravid has slipped up too many times. Is Dhoni a wicket keeper or a Catch 22? Kumble can neither bend nor catch a ball. Sehwag and Munaf move like hippos. What a fielding combination! This is all due to Greg and More. I’ll sack both of you!

Chappell: In that case, I have to go back and coach the South Australian Under-5.

Pawar: I am not concerned with that. But you have let me down badly with your tall claims. Come to think of it, you too can attend Sourav’s coaching sessions. Perhaps, you can learn a thing

Debates

I talk a lot. It starts with a sweet Good Morning to my roommate and uptill the abrupt GOOD NIGHT from him. In the office, during coffee breaks, snack outings and even in the restroom. And most of them run into debates, ofcourse barring the ones in the restroom. All of these debates have a pattern. A Debate typically starts like this. Someone states a fact and extrapolates it in time or geography or culture etc. Then Someone else objects to it (That's most probably me;Coz of my poor memory I dont - possible can't state facts). Sometimes I do prefer to disengage myself and sit back and listen. Most of these extrapolations turnout to be non verifiable, and hence futile; They are extrapolations at an unrealistic point, something that is out of reach of us mere mortals. But a rare minority of these are actually verifiable. Something like whether Ganguly will make a decent score in the upcoming Pak Tour '06. Which side to take? Lets look into this process with an Engineer's eye.
In any debate there are three major factors based on which an objective decision can be arrived at. We have the past and current statistics that paint a clear a clear picture of the situation. We extrapolate it to the future using our Intuition. That's the quality the differentiates people. Some listen to their minds more than their heart for Intuition (And We call them cold blooded) and others listen to their heart more (We call them sissy). And still worse, this feature is not consistent with people across time. Sometimes, we can listen to our mind more because we are not emotionally attached to the situation anymore or the outcome does not affect us. When one is forced to protect his ass, then it's the heart that speakes the most. So What is the ideal recipee ?? Business schools talk a lot about objective thinking, uninfluenced by human emotion. Is that the right thing to do ?? Is Emotion not a guiding light ?? But, history reveals great men almost always listened to their hearts more than their minds. And We all know that passionate Savrav Ganguly is a far greater captain than Icy Cool Azhar. Yes, I listen to my heart more than my mind.
